Andrea Powell’s attempts to create liminal spaces that allow for the consideration of the deconstruction of the metaphysics of presence. Powell's goal is to disrupt the privileging of presence over absence and instead represent the relational structure between absence and presence.
Powell considers the body to be not just a physical form but rather the edifice of being. The boundary between the corporeal body and the external world is blurred and shifting. To except that it is simply the physical barrier of the skin that separates’ would exclude the psychological sphere that exists beyond our corporeal boundaries and the reciprocal relationship between self and context. As such she believes the body must be taken into consideration with every art work no matter how dematerialized or conceptual.
Powell believes that through her practice she can express herself much more eloquently and profoundly than any amount of words could ever do. Her work invites a fluid relationship between intention and meaning, which ultimately transcends language.
